Academic Background/ Research Interests

Michael Miles completed his Doctoral Degree in Human and Organization Systems at the Fielding Institute in Santa Barbara. He holds Masters Degrees in Organization Development (Pepperdine) and International Development (University of Alberta). Areas of his current work and research activity include effective leadership practice (focus on North American high tech organizations and Chinese manufacturing enterprises), comparative cross-cultural organization effectiveness, and the use of simulation to teach real-world business skills.

Consulting /Professional Practice

Dr. Miles has implemented advanced management training in organization effectiveness, organization change, and strategy development. Major consulting intervention areas in which he has worked and coached others include: Managing Complex System Change, Business Strategy Development, Productivity Improvement, Organization Redesign, System Thinking, Executive Management Strategy, Negotiation and Conflict Management, Effective Leadership Skills, Managing Across Cultural Barriers, and International Organization Development.

Professional Clients

Canadian clients have included Newbridge, Mitel, Magardi Software, Bank of Montreal, Nortel, Semiconductor Insights, Learnsoft, Petro-Canada, Syncrude, the Conference Board of Canada, Geomatics, CIDA, and numerous Departments of the Provincial Government of Alberta and the Federal Government of Canada.

International clients have included Alcatel, the World Bank, Office of the Prime Minister (Thailand), Petroleum Authority of Thailand, Thai Ministry of Interior, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, the Chinese Academy of Social Science, the China National Petroleum Corporation, the Research Institute for Petroleum Industry Development (Beijing), Management Cadre Institute (Beijing), Liu Li Cement Company (China), Xinhua Airlines, Xing Ping Petro-Chemical Plant Shaanxi (China), Ministry of Personnel (China), and the Bangladesh National Railways

Academic Appointments have included Faculty positions at the University of Ottawa, Athabasca University, Concordia University, the Canadian Centre for Management Development, and the Canadian Institute for Petroleum Industry Development (CIPID).

Current Reality

Dr. Miles is currently a Faculty member at the University of Ottawa where he teaches Organization Development and Change, Strategy, and System Thinking. He also manages his own consulting firm and consults.
